Password Changes

At b-it you have two different passwords. One is for the Windows system, the other one is for using the UNIX systems and some general services like email, etc.

Windows

To change your windows password, please press <ctrl><alt>-<del> while logged into windows with your account and select “Change Password”.

UNIX, mailserver, etc.

The procedure differs for students and staff members:

students:

Please use the following URL to manage your CS account first:

https://webportal.informatik.uni-bonn.de/UserPortal/sgn_change.shtml

IMPORTANT: this only changes your email password. The local b-it UNIX passwords can be changed at the URL https://nic1.bit.uni-bonn.de/.

staff:

To change your UNIX password, please open a webbrowser and visit the URL https://nic1.bit.uni-bonn.de/.

Loss of Credentials

If you should lose your password or your whole account information, please follow the instructions for your case group:

students:

If you only forgot your windows password, you can use this Webinterface to change it, if you log in using your UNIX password.

For mailserver and UNIX passwords, please visit the SGN at the Römerstrasse (bring a form of identification including a picture of you, i.e. a passport) to reset your password. The new password can then be set via this webinterface, if you remember your windows password.

If you forgot both passwords, you have to visit the SGN at the Römerstrasse (bring a form of identification including a picture of you, i.e. a passport) to reset your password. Then come over to the systems group office (0.6) to reset your passwords at b-it. If you want to be sure to meet us there, make an appointment via email.

staff:

As long as you can remember at least one of your passwords, you can login to https://nic1.bit.uni-bonn.de and reset both at the same time. If you lost both. please contact or visit (room 0.6) the systems group, we will aid you in recovering your account data.
